Qingdao Key Laboratory of Germplasm Innovation
and Application of Main Crops (GIAMC)
Founded in 2009, GIAMC now focuses on three major research directions: germplasm innovative technology, high-quality gene markers and chromosomal localization, utilization and evaluation of innovative germplasm. Innovative technologies such as haploid, in vitro chemical mutagenesis and radiation mutagenesis were established. Studies on molecular markers related to salt, drought, disease resistance and high yield were explored. Many functional genes were cloned and identified. Transformation systems of main crops were efficiently established. A series of new varieties in maize, peanut and wheat were produced. A remarkable economic and social benefit was obtained through a large scale promotion.
GIAMC contains several research groups with reasonable structure such as discipline, specialty, title, age and so on. In GIAMC there are 32 research staffs including 17 professors, 12 associate professors, 3 lecturers, among of which 29 have PhD degree. All Members possess basic knowledge and skills, e.g. molecular biology, crop genetics and breeding, crop physiology with high-yield cultivation, analysis and testing technology. All of them have the ability of cooperation and communication, and can finish scientific research tasks.
The total area of GIAMC is 1200 m2, which includes many molecular breeding equipments, e.g. protein purification system, liquid phase chromatograph, near infrared analyzer for grain quality, DNA UV Gel imaging system, PCR, hybridization system, fluorescence quantitative PCR, Chip electrophoresis apparatus, ultra-low temperature refrigerator. The total fixed assets amount is 30 million yuan. GIAMC has a 200 m3 medium and long-term germplasm base, which keeps more than 3600 germplasm resources from maize and other crops. An online service platform for main crop germplasm resources was constructed, which facilitates the query system for production of main crop varieties with high-yield, multi-resistance and good quality in Qingdao City. GIAMC has more than 400-acre fields in Jiaozhou and Hainan province, which equipped with farm operation machinery, field irrigation facilities, greenhouses, drying field, hanging storage room, seed bank and so on. This is easy to meet the need of crop breeding in fields.
A series of scientific results were achieved in GIAMC. In the last 3 years, we participated in 80 research projects and have 31.96 million yuans´ fund support. More than 3000 germplasm resources and 300 inbred lines were produced. 13 new varieties were accredited by national or provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee. Over 250 papers were published and 25 patents were applied including 9 authorized patents. 1 software copyright and 3 national plant variety authorities were achieved. Also 10 national, provincial and municipal awards were obtained, and 2 research results were assessed.
